You may think it’s obvious that you would go to an orthodontist for your orthodontic needs, however, there are also dentists who offer some types of braces or Invisalign. Orthodontists are considered specialists in their field. Dentists are important for your dental health and needs, but they are not specialists in orthodontia. To become an orthodontist, a doctor has to first get his dental degree (DDS). After attending dental school, he must then go to school for an additional 3,700 hours of orthodontic training. You read that right! 3,700 additional hours!
This additional education and training are exclusively focused on the movement of teeth, facial bones, jawbones, and soft tissue. An orthodontist is also considered to be a “dentofacial” specialist.
Going to a dentist for orthodontic services would be similar to seeing your family doctor for knee surgery; you would need an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in knee surgery.
With that said, Dr. Grewal is always willing to work with your dentist and will encourage you to continue to see the dentist on a regular basis for regular check-ups, and general dentistry (such as cavities, etc.)
