Congratulations on completing your orthodontic treatment journey! While your braces or aligners have done their job, maintaining that beautiful, straight smile requires a little ongoing effort—particularly when it comes to caring for your retainer. At Love Orthodontics, Dr. G is here to ensure you know how to keep your retainer, and your smile, in the best possible condition.
Why Cleaning Your Retainer is Important
Wearing a retainer is key to keeping your teeth in their new positions, but did you know that neglecting to clean it can lead to oral health issues? Your retainer spends hours in your mouth each day, especially while you sleep, making it a prime spot for food particles, bacteria, and plaque to accumulate. If you’ve noticed a filmy buildup, that’s likely plaque—if left unchecked, it can harden into tartar and potentially lead to cavities. But don’t worry! Proper retainer care is simple with the right steps.
Best Practices for Cleaning Your Retainer
Keeping your retainer clean isn’t hard at all. It’s even easier with this list of tips to remember!
· Daily Gentle Brushing – Clean your retainer every day using a soft-bristled toothbrush. A gentle brush will remove any lingering plaque and bacteria. You can also use a small amount of unscented, mild dish soap for a more thorough clean. Always rinse with lukewarm water—hot water can deform your retainer.
· Baking Soda Cleanse – Baking soda is a fantastic, natural cleaner. Mix equal parts water and baking soda to form a paste that’s perfect for scrubbing away odors and bacteria. Simply brush the mixture onto your retainer, then rinse with warm or cool water.
· Hydrogen Peroxide Soak – To brighten your retainer and eliminate bacteria, soak it in a solution of warm water and 3% hydrogen peroxide for about 30 minutes. Make sure to rinse thoroughly afterward.
· Vinegar Solution – A 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar can be used as an alternative to hydrogen peroxide. This solution is great for cleaning and deodorizing your retainer. Soak for 20 minutes, then rinse well to remove any vinegar taste.
· Store-Bought Retainer Cleaners – If DIY cleaning isn’t your style, there are plenty of commercial retainer cleaning products available. Retainer cleaning tablets are a popular choice—just drop one into a glass of water, soak your retainer, and you’re good to go.
· Hydrate for Oral Health – Staying hydrated isn’t just good for your body—it’s great for your teeth and retainer, too! Drinking water helps wash away food particles and bacteria, keeping your retainer cleaner and reducing the risk of cavities.
· Keep Your Retainer Case Clean – Don’t forget to clean your retainer case regularly. A quick wash with dish soap once or twice a week will keep it fresh. You can also pop it in the dishwasher’s top rack for a more thorough clean. (Just make sure you don’t put your retainer in the dishwasher. It might melt!)
Things to Avoid When Cleaning Your Retainer
While all the things that we mentioned above are great for your retainer, it’s important to remember that there are some things to stay away from too. Make sure to avoid these common mistakes:
· Say No to Disinfectant Wipes – Disinfectant wipes may seem like a quick fix, but they contain chemicals that aren’t safe for your retainer and can leave a bad taste in your mouth.
· Avoid Hot Water – Hot water can cause your retainer to warp, which might affect its fit and effectiveness.
· Skip the Mouthwash and Toothpaste – Mouthwash can stain your retainer, and toothpaste can be too abrasive, potentially scratching the surface.
· Always Use a Case – Never leave your retainer out in the open or wrapped in a napkin. It can dry out or get damaged, which might compromise its effectiveness. It also might get thrown away by accident.
Special Care for Permanent Retainers
For those with permanent retainers, the focus shifts to keeping the bonded area clean. Brush and floss carefully around the wire to prevent plaque buildup.
