When Should My Child See an Orthodontist Here’s Why Age 7 MattersIf you think orthodontic treatment is just for teens, you’re not alone – but the truth is, the journey to a healthy, confident smile often begins much earlier.

At Love Orthodontics, Dr. G agrees with the American Association of Orthodontists that children should have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. That might sound early, but there’s a good reason for it. By this age, most kids have a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth, and their jaws are still developing – making it the perfect time to spot any potential issues before they become more complex.

Braces with Baby Teeth? Yes, Really.

Many parents are surprised to hear that some children begin treatment while they still have baby teeth. While not every child will need early intervention, in some cases, Dr. G may recommend starting the first phase of treatments – especially if there are clear signs of concern, such as:

  • Crowding or spacing issues
  • A crossbite, overbite, or underbite
  • Jaw growth problems
  • Teeth that come in at odd angles or not at all
  • Difficulty chewing, biting, or speaking

Early Treatment

This early stage is known as Phase 1 treatment and usually begins between ages 7–10. It may involve braces on a few teeth, a palatal expander, or other orthodontic appliances. The goal is to guide jaw development, make room for incoming adult teeth, and correct harmful habits early – setting the stage for a more balanced smile.

What Is Two-Phase Treatment?

Two-phase orthodontic treatment is exactly what it sounds like: a planned approach where treatment is administered in two stages.

  • Phase 1 (Early Interceptive Treatment): Focuses on foundational corrections while a child still has baby teeth.
  • Resting Period: A break in treatment while the remaining permanent teeth come in naturally.
  • Phase 2 (Comprehensive Treatment): Usually begins around age 11–13, when all or most permanent teeth are in place. This phase uses braces or clear aligners to fine-tune the bite and complete the smile transformation.

The key benefit of two-phase treatment is that it can reduce the severity of future problems, prevent the need for surgery or tooth extraction, and it can often make Phase 2 shorter and more efficient.
